Experimental Metal Casting: Water Casting & Organic Forms

Explore a more unpredictable and sculptural side of silversmithing through experimental metal casting.

In this hands-on 3-hour workshop, you will work with sterling silver and learn how molten metal can be cast into water to create spontaneous textures, organic shapes, and unique forms.

No two castings are ever the same.

Once you've created your cast pieces, you will choose the most interesting forms and learn how to refine them into wearable jewelry such as a pendant, earrings, charms, or another small piece.

No previous jewelry-making or casting experience is required. I will guide you step by step throughout the entire process.

What You Will Learn

During the workshop, you will:

• learn the basic principles of experimental metal casting

• prepare sterling silver for casting

• safely work with a torch and molten metal

• create several experimental water castings

• explore naturally formed textures and organic shapes

• select and refine your favourite cast pieces

• saw, file, sand, texture, and polish the metal

• solder components when needed

• transform selected castings into wearable jewelry

• use professional silversmithing tools safely

This workshop is not about following a fixed design. Part of the experience is discovering what the metal creates and then deciding how to turn that form into a finished piece of jewelry.

Materials

The workshop price includes up to 10 g of sterling silver per participant.

You can use your silver for multiple casting attempts during the session, and you may remelt and reuse suitable cast pieces as you experiment.

If you would like to create a larger piece or use additional silver, extra sterling silver will be available for purchase at the studio.

The workshop price includes instruction, studio time, use of professional tools and equipment, torch and gas, standard consumables, and up to 10 g of sterling silver.

Because this workshop involves torches and molten metal, we provide full safety instruction and hands-on guidance throughout the session.

What You Will Take Home

You will leave the studio with your experimental silver castings and at least one finished piece of wearable jewelry, depending on the size and complexity of your design.

The beauty of this technique is that you cannot completely control the final shape.

Every curve, texture, and detail is created in the moment, making your finished piece truly one of a kind.
